Philosophy of Treatment
The philosophy of Home Court Advantage, Inc. is to assist the child in gaining control over his life and to transition to the least restrictive environment – hopefully his own home. We will do this by creating a treatment milieu high on staffing and low on physical constraints (e.g. locks) and unsupervised free time. As the name of our treatment program implies, we emphasize the concept of home. We have designed the treatment facility and program to replicate a natural home environment as much as possible. Home Court I has high staff to client ratio 1:2 during most waking hours designed to give each client a high degree of individualized attention before they act out, and thereby interrupt the cycle of maladaptive behavior they have developed to force caregivers and society to pay attention to them. Home Court II we serve a population ranging from age 10-21. The ratio is 1:6 during waking hours and 1:8 during non-waking hours. Home Court III it is divided into an East end and a West end to run as two separate facilities. It has a capacity of 8 on each end with a respite room on each end. The residents that are at these homes require a 1:6 ratio during waking hours and a 1:8 ratio during non-waking hours. However Home Court chooses to provide a 1:4 ratio during waking hours and a 1:6 ratio during non-waking hours. At the same time, we place a great deal of emphasis on repairing and reuniting any natural family bonds that exist and work towards the eventual return of the child to his natural home. If the option of returning to his natural family is not available, we then focus on transitioning the child to the least restrictive and most homelike option that is available. This may be a foster home for a young child or a transitional apartment for an older child. These decisions are made in conjunction with the child’s caseworkers at DFS and any other involved state or local agency, all of whom are seen as vital members of the treatment team.
